Ubuntu 9.04 Remix: made USB bootable and used GParted to partition the hardrive; deleted D:\ and resized C:\ to 40G; created an extended partition with 10G ext4 as /, 20G ext3 as /shared, 2G swap and rest ext4 as /home.
Desktop Tower Defense: it needs some vertical scrolling, but most time it’s good to play the game.
Netflix: logged in and asked to install Silverlight; played movie smoothly; speaker sound is ok at home but it may be too small in public; use earphone then; no much vertical scrolling needed. If the latest Safari is used, the vertical screen asset should be just right. I’m using IE 7 installed with XP. Will install Safari, FireFox 3.5 and Chrome later. Update: Netflix does not support Safari.
Skype: it worked great without any audio configuration.
UPS delivered on schedule. Just opened the box, plugged in the battery and it booted ok into XP. I’m writing this post from the 1000 HE. It will take some time to get used to this small key keyboard, but it’s more comfortable than some other netbooks I tried at frys with smaller keyboard. I have not found the door to open to replace the 2GB RAM I bought with the computer. Will need to read the manual:-)
Wireless worked fine with my home setup. I forgot about MAC fillter enabled on my access point so it took a few more minutes to set the wireless up.
Tried a few screen resolution but settle down the standard 1024×600. There’s definitely a way to have bigger screen than 600 if they can narrow the space between the case edge and LCD panel.
Just ordered a new netbook from Amazon. Picked 1000HE over 1008HA after reading many reviews. 1000HE has longer battery life (9.5 hours) and more ports. It’s also easier to upgrade RAM but 1008HA is lighter though.
It will come with XP Home pre-installed. It would be nice to have Ubuntu pre-installed at cheaper price ($30 less?).
